Places of interest

      • Day 1
        Flight to Venice.

Arrive at the airport 90 minutes before the scheduled departure time of your flight to Venice. On arrival, pick up your hire car at the airport and start your tour of East Tyrol. Check in to your accommodation and first night in Osttirol. (Approx. 260 km).

      • Day 2
        The Lienz Dolomites.

There’s nothing better to start your stay in Osttirol than discovering the Dolomites of southern Austria – an ideal destination for skiers in winter and mountain activity enthusiasts during good weather. The Lienz Dolomites is a mountain range that actually belongs to the Gailtal Alps, quite far away from the Dolomites. Several valleys divide the massif into groups of peaks, many of which can be explored on excursions of different levels. You can also take the opportunity to stroll through the city of Lienz, known as the city of the sun, and discover, in its surroundings, Bruck Castle – a fortress dating back to the late thirteenth century which now houses a museum. If you enjoy history, visit Aguntum and you’ll find vestiges of an ancient Roman city and an interesting museum. If instead you like adventure, we suggest you make a descent on the Osttirodler – a toboggan that covers a distance of 2.7 km in the heart of the countryside where you can enjoy the spectacular views at full speed. Night in Osttirol.

      • Day 3
        The Dolomites.

Today, you can cross into Italy to discover the Dolomites. Drive to Cortina d’Ampezzo, in the province of Belluno, region of Veneto. Known as the “Queen of the Dolomites”, the charm of the landscape and the many sporting activities it offers make this city a paradise for mountain and nature lovers at any time of the year. But not only that because this town was a witness to World War I and it is possible to visit some of the places where recent history was written. (In total, a journey of approx. 160 km). Night in Osttirol.

      • Day 4
        The Hochpustertal Valley.

Located between East Tyrol and the Italian Alto Adige, those that visit here say that the real paradise of the Hochpustertal Valley is on the Austrian side. Situated at the foot of the Thurntal mountain and at an altitude of over 2,400 metres is Sillian, one of the largest cities in Osttirol and starting point for the many hikers who want to explore the Carnic Crest. You’ll also find in this area other small but charming towns of the likes of Abfaltersbach, Anras and Strassen. And don’t forget to visit Heinfels Castle – a great symbol of the Hochpustertal Valley. (In total, a journey of approx. 100 km). Night in Osttirol.

      • Day 5
        The Grossglockner trail.

A must-visit place when travelling around East Tyrol is the Hohe Tauern National Park – one of the largest in Central Europe. The second most visited place in Austria is the spectacular Grossglockner trail which runs through the National Park. If you drive along the most famous toll road in the area for its wonderful alpine views, you’ll come to the panoramic terrace of Franz Josef Höhe, which is located at an altitude of 2,400 and faces the Grossglockner (the highest mountain in Austria) with views over the largest glacier in the Eastern Alps. At the visitors’ centre, you’ll find interesting displays and information about the various walking trails that you can go on from there. On the way back, you can stop off in the pretty village of Heiligenblut, in the valley of Moll, famous for the prominent spire of its church and for being an important centre of pilgrimage. (A journey of approx. 160 km). Night in Osttirol.

      • Day 6
The glaciers and waterfalls of Hohe Tauern.

Today, we suggest you discover another gem hidden away in the Hohe Tauern National Park. Take the road towards the Felbertauern tunnel (payment required) to the Stubach Valley above Uttendorf. Here, there are cable cars that climb up to the White lake (2,600 m) with views over the glaciers of the Tauern Pass in the heart of the high mountains. Spend the afternoon in Krimml and visit the famous waterfalls – the highest in Austria – which you can explore along a pretty road. (In total, a journey of approx. 235 km). Night in Osttirol.

      • Day 7
        Villach (Carinthia).

While on your trip, you can take the opportunity to discover another Austrian region. We suggest you travel to Villach in the region of Carinthia, close to Italy and Slovenia. The town has a very large historical centre around the Hauptplatz, which is full of shops and restaurants. From the Hauptplatz, you can walk to the Church of St. Jakob and the Drava River, which runs through the city, lending it an even more charming atmosphere. Very near Villach are the towns of Bad Bleiberg and Warmbad-Judendorf, where you can take a relaxing thermal bath. (In total, a journey of approx. 250 km). Night in Osttirol.

      • Day 8
        Return flight.

Today, you’ll have to head back to Venice Airport quite early. We suggest you book a flight in the evening so that you can have a leisurely 250-km drive back. Return your hire car to the office at the airport. Check-in, boarding and return flight. Arrival and end of the trip.
