It is an area that conserves a surprising mountain landscape, with outstanding parks— El Montnegre i el Corredor, Serralada Litoral and Serralada de Marina—next to the Mediterranean Sea, where Alella DO wine is produced. The region was the summer home of Barcelona’s middle class at the turn of the twentieth century, hence its interesting examples of Catalan Art Nouveau architecture, particularly in Canet de Mar, Mataró and Argentona. A singular feature is the large number of museums found here, some of them dedicated to curious subjects, such as lace making, earthenware jugs, nativity scenes, molluscs and pharmacy. Cultural festivals, music festivals, craft fairs, local festivals and numerous gastronomy events are just some of the many other attractions of the region.Other highlights such as Montseny Natural Park (mountains almost 2000 m. high) or La Roca Company Stores (Europe´s biggest outlet shopping center) are less than 45 minutes away. Twenty-five kilometres of coastline with two-dozen beaches of fine sand; that’s El Garraf (Costa Barcelona South). It is a paradise of sun, sea and mild temperatures all year round in which to enjoy the outdoor life and water sports in its four marinas. For culture, Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú are the venues for international film and music festivals. If you’re look for fiestas, there’s Carnival in the winter and local festivals in the summer; while the gastronomy of the region has classic fish dishes and innovations in creative cuisine that are a tourist attraction on their own right. Its nineteenth-century art is incomparable, particularly the examples of Romanticism and Catalan Art Nouveau, which anyone can discover on the guided trails to Sant Pere de Ribes, Sitges and Vilanova i la Geltrú. Other highlights such as Montserrat monastery & Holy mountain or Gaudi´s masterpierce Colonia Güell are less than 45 minutes away.
